Have you ever thought that you are feeling low and need a quick fix?

Do you feel you really lack motivation on certain days?

We know that it’s all about our hormones.

So what are hormones and how does it help us or affect us???

Hormones are chemical substances that are secreted directly from the endocrine glands into the blood, which carries them to organs and tissues of the body to exert their functions. There are hormones that act on different aspects of bodily functions and processes. Some of these include:

  • Development and growth.
  • Metabolism.
  • Sexual function, reproductive growth and health.
  • Mood and cognitive function.
  • Maintenance of body temperature and others.

There are many types of hormones, but few of them that can decide our level of happiness are Serotonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin and Endorphin.

Dopamine is the “feel good” neurotransmitter that drives your brain’s reward system. To stimulate dopamine quickly all you have to do is to eat a sweet that you love or crave for, listen to your favorite music, try and get good sleep or complete a small task or a chore of your choice.

Serotonin is the “mood stabilizer” that improves sleep, reduces anxiety and increases happiness. To stimulate serotonin, just get some sunshine, go for a walk, practice meditation or yoga or even some simple stretches.

Oxytocin is the “bonding hormone” it is released when we feel connected to people. To stimulate oxytocinpet your dog or cat, give someone a hug, hold hands, or do something special for your loved ones.

Endorphin is the “natural painkiller”. It reduces stress and increases pleasure. To stimulate endorphinsdo some exercise, eat dark chocolate, watch some comedy, burn some essential oils or use fragrance in the room.

Hope these simple inexpensive techniques help you with your mood. Try any of these to alleviate your mood quickly on a normal day or whenever you feel low and need a quick fix.

Of course, we can’t control our hormones but we can control our mind to a certain extent and to our advantage…..right??
