The basics of creating courses for adult learners
Published: Jun 19th, 2020 04:55 pmCreating courses for adult learners is today a challenging task because
of the information overload present. One needs to consider few very important
things before creating one. Creating and learning from courses allows mature
audience to expand their skills and improve on their knowledge. The current
trend of e-learning allows users to log in their convenience and catch up on
whenever they have the time.
Before planning to deliver a course or preparing for a webinar, there are
a few things that need to be kept in mind.
1. Know your audience:
Not knowing the audience can be disastrous. It is
always best to research and study about your audience before beginning to plan
your course. Information can be gained from various sources like direct
interviews, surveys and observation. It is important to understand their needs,
goals, expectations and know what will benefit them.
It is important
to define the learning objective of the audience. Adult learners learn only
when they want to learn. It is therefore important to start understanding what
your goals are and what your objectives are. Before beginning to develop your
module, it is best to know on what level the learners are. Are they proficient
with technology, are they on a beginner level, an intermediate or an advanced
level. Once this is identified it becomes easy to address the audience
accordingly.
2. Identify the
requirement:
It
is essential to design a plan that will suit the organizations requirements.
Knowing every tad bit of detail including subject, skills, tasks and
application is required. Help from other online instructors, or forums may be
taken into account for the same.
3.
Select the right tool:
The right tool can help create a course well or destroy it. If you have a
strong programming knowledge, then choose a tool that will help you create a
course they way you want it to. Else, choose to opt for a tool with more basic
functions and ready to use templates. Once skill develops, you can opt for more
customizable complex letters.
4. Use of cloud based material:
Sharing information across a wide range of platforms is essential to
enhance the learning experience. There are many platforms that provide
user-friendly options to save, share and learn. They also provide base to
create courses and form a module of own.
5. Experiment with
tools:
In order to keep
audience engaged it is always a good idea to be interactive with them this can
be done via simulations, Audios, videos, articles, blogs and images. An ocean
of video resources are available on YouTube relevant to any topic. Multimedia
makes the overall module more appealing and nice to watch. This also targets
the different kinds of learners and helps enhance their skills.
6. Be Abstract:
Make sure that there is a clear balance between your pictures and your
text. Too much of anything may spoil the entire module. A simple outline, a
clear structure and neat language will add to the effect of the module. Make
sure to avoid complex examples that may not
be clearly understood by the learners.
7. Keep it close to
real life:
It is important
to create exposure via real life examples and activities. A combination of both
synchronous and asynchronous learning patterns is required to ensure that
learning happens to a maximum. Using threads, blogs, and discussion forums
allow the users to be in contact with each other on a common platform . this
enables active participation and invokes interest among participants.
