How to Break a Bad Habit

Published: Jun 28th, 2021 07:50 pmBy Binu Kurien

Hi Friends,

Bad habits interrupt in your life and prevent you from accomplishing your goals. It is too common now days with pandemic and sitting at home. I am not an exception and these  habits may demotivate you , interrupt your life and prevent you accomplishing your goals. It is jeopardizing my health- both mentally and physically. They are wasting my time  and energy. I sincerely hope i am an exception.

Well, writing this , my mind wants to eat ghee Mysore  paak. It is not a bad idea when sitting at home in lockdown and thinking that last week I  only had taken my sweet quota to the fullest, I shouldn't  but the mind is only thinking about order through swiggy.  Why is that?

I was fascinated by this question and pondered over it  and  found that When you concentrate on not thinking about something , you end up thinking about it. The same rule holds true when it comes to breaking our bad habits.

By relentlessly trying not to do something, we end up thinking about it so much  that we subconsciously provoke  ourselves to cheat- to do the exact thing we re trying not to do.

Most of the time, bad habits are simply a way of dealing with stress and boredom. Everything from biting your nails to overspending on a shopping spree to drinking every weekend or eating too many snacks while you are watching Tv ,  to wasting time on the internet can be a simple response to stress and boredom.

But it doesn't have to be that way. You can teach yourself new and healthy ways to deal with stress and boredom, which you can then substitute in place of your bad habits.

Of course, sometimes the stress or boredom that is on the surface is actually caused by deeper issues. These issues can be tough to think about, but if you're serious about making changes then you have to be honest with yourself.

Are there certain beliefs or reasons that are behind the bad habits? Is there something deeper — a fear, an event, or a limiting belief — that is causing you to hold on to something that is bad for you?

Recognizing the causes of your bad habits is crucial to overcoming them.

You don't eliminate a bad habit, you replace it.

All of the habits that you have right now — good or bad — are in your life for a reason. In some way, these behaviours provide a benefit to you, even if they are bad for you in other ways. And in many cases, your bad habit is a simple way to cope with stress. For example, biting your nails, pulling your hair, tapping your foot, or clenching your jaw.

For instance , as I was trying to eliminate the Mysore  Pak or my  favourite ice-cream , I may add a thought that I eat a bowl of freshly cut fruits.

Another example, if you smoke when you get stressed, then it's a bad plan to “just stop smoking” when that happens. Instead, you should come up with a different way to deal with stress and insert that new behaviour instead of having a cigarette.

I have a strong feeing that if you practise this new habit  , it will become  a routine . It is hard,  but we  have to start some where and after the Mandala period (word courtesy goes to Shiprajee of Breathe to Live )

You’ll start doing the right thing without even thinking about it

Be happy and Make others happy

Sincerely yours.
